Imagine a world where nothing is the same. A world where eight year old children suddenly discover they can turn into panthers, and where teenagers battle by manipulating the elements.
It is the same world where children and teens who find themselves blessed with unusual powers leave their families for a school which can teach them both to handle their wondrous abilities and to deal with the persecution which will come from the ‘normal’ people.
It is the same world where political conflict rages among three nations, and the Ethereal Academy for the Unnaturally Gifted, known simply as Ethereal among most, stays tucked safely away on an island in the middle of the ocean.
It is our world.

As a seventh dynasty broke upon the nation of Yuroil, a boat sailed out of the capital's city harbor under cover of shadow and dusk. The only passengers were a rugged young man and his wife, who was pregnant.
The two, Mason and Eva Diona, were escaping years of persecution in the city. They had lived in many places, but always moved, because people could not keep from noticing strange things. The house was always empty after seven PM. Feathers were everywhere, in an area not native to a single specie of bird. And whenever someone did happen to catch them at home, they seemed hurried, and as though they were hiding something.
The Dionas reached land, building a house for themselves. When Eva had her baby, she named her Angelique. Two years later, she had another little girl, who was named Andromeda. As the years pressed onm, the Dionas discovered just how massive the island was; it was twice as big as the capital city they had left behind.
Other families slowly began to turn up on the island, and the story was the same. They were fleeing the public because of persecution, and they all had something to hide: a strange power. Mason and Eva had been forced from many homes because they changed into birds, but other abilities came from a wide range: the ability to cast spells, control the elements, become any range of animal, tell the future... the list went on and on.
After a veritable village had sprung up, they decided collectively to found a school for the upbringing of any other people of gifts, naming it the Ethereal Academy for the Unnaturally Gifted. Ethereal sprang up, and was as large as a palace. Word spread to the mainland quickly, not only in the nation of Yuroil but to the lands of Getret and Barbur as well. The school was set up for children, and the children came; outcast from the world, they found ways to find this magical island haven.
Students at Ethereal learn both basic magic control, as well as subjects specific to their power, and of course, combat, with both weapons and their specific gift. They live in the school castle, while graduates may choose to stay on the island and live in Ethereal village instead of returning to one of the mainland nations.
Mason and Eva died of a mysterious accident. No one was ever able to discover the cause, and shock and grief hit the entire community of Ethereal Island, both the school and the surrounding village. Taking their place as they attempted to solve the mystery were their now-grown daughters, Angelique and Andromeda Diona. They now control the school, while trying to ward off bribes from the warring nations of Yuroil, Getret, and Barbur, training the gifted in defensive combat, and trying to solve the pressing mystery of their parent's death. For if the very founders of Ethereal are not truly safe on the island of safety, then maybe no one is...
